Nestos river is one of the most important rivers in Greece. Its springs are located in Rila mountain in south Bulgaria. Its overall length is 243 km. 140km of the river is in Greek territory. The climate conditions, the geological relief of the area and water created the appropriate conditions for the development of different kinds of biotopes hosting more than 150 animal species. Nestos river separates the mountains to the south part of Rodopi mountain chain creating the well known “Nestos straits” (“Stena”). Nestos river is an ideal touristic destination for extreme sports like canoeing and trekking. The Nestos Delta is located on the southern border of the prefectures of Kavala and Xanthi. The Nestos delta created by the deposition of sediment that deposits in the river estuary. The Nestos Delta is one of the most important wetlands in the country and Europe, due to the extent and variety of habitats. Is included as an entry in the List of Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention, belonging to the Natura 2000 network and in the European Union Bird Special Protection Areas. It is part of the National Park of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, which extends from the Nestos Delta until Vistonida lakes and Ismarida.In fact the Nestos Delta consists of a mosaic of individual wetlands The Nestos Delta presents a great variety of habitats and additional compose a mosaic conducive to wildlife.
