Kobuleti Protected Areas (Ispani 2 – Managed Nature Reserve and Ispani 1 – Strict Nature Reserve) was created in 2002 in order to preserve unique Sphagnum percolation peat bogs. Since 1997 the Ispani Sphagnum Peat Bogs have been on the RAMSAR Convention list of wetlands of international importance. They are also habitat for many birds that migrate to the area during the winter. Especially interesting is that along with representatives of north flora, such as Sphagnum (peat moss), royal fern and sundew, the elements of Colchis flora, namely Nymphaea colchica, Rhododendron ponticum, Rhododendron luteum and others can also be found.
In 1964, on the territory of the Nature Reserve, an Early Bronze Age settlement site (the first half of the third Millennium BC) was discovered under the peat layer.
